Hello I'm Karl Busch and I am so proud of Step55. This will be our 4th year of providing activity classes direct to the community. We are now so well supported by the community (our customers) that the community is leading how we grow through a demand for creativity and variety of classes helping us to keep active and socially connected especially as we age. At a time when just 54% of Jersey adults are meeting recommended activity guidelines compared to 64% in the UK we are continually increasing class numbers and size. We currently support 16 activity classes per week for the local community and have adapted weekly classes for charities such as Dementia Jersey and Headway focusing on cognitive routines through our chair based themes based on our EIM, Line Dance and Social Dance mixes. We have attracted experience and through a combination of experience and voluntary support we are expecting to provide another 6 classes by June 2026.

We have been well supported with gov.je Connect Me funding which has helped us grow into the self sustaining social purpose business we are today. I have a vision for Step55 that I want to share with Jersey that could be at the forefront of addressing the issues we face with an ageing population, care and building resilience to live independent lives well beyond others before us. Sometimes it is difficult to share a vision but I think if you can provide what people need and hang onto the rudder and guide it as it takes off it becomes easier to communicate. I also have an island wide vision for Jersey based on our own individual health and wellbeing whereby we buck the trend and live healthier happier more active lives than our neighbours. This is why I have decided to stand for senator in the 2026 gov.je election.

New Classes

I am delighted to be sharing our exciting new classes of 2026. Our Ballet classes are hosted by Emily an ex professional Ballet Dancer and Anthony an experienced Tai Chi practitioner. Both hugely passionate and talented in what they do. Emily is also supporting us with her own unique ballet inspired Yoga classes created through both her experience as a professional ballet dancer and extensive travel... Emily says, "my Yoga class is beginner-friendly combining gentle lengthening, balance and strengthening through guided breath. Inspired by foundational exercise practiced as a professional ballet dancer this class helps you build stability improve posture, and connect to your body in a calm and supportive way. No experience needed."

Emily's ballet is simple and adapts beautifully and easily to ability. Karl says ... "Myself as a man and having never once been interested in ballet I find the classes physically and mentally fulfilling and it gives me a real sense of achievement. There is the odd superb performance from Emily and beautiful music worth the £8 fee alone !! We now have a exciting new - back to back - Yoga and Ballet basics class at St Clements Parish Hall Mondays. Yoga classes with Emily also start  8.50- 9.50am on Tuesdays at St Martins Parish Hall. Ballet basics Monday Trinity PH 1.45-2.45 and Friday St Martin PH 11.45-12.45 all classes £8 except Yoga Ballet Basics Combo £12.

Tai Chi and Anthony says - " the practice of Tai Chi leads to a variety of improvements in health and wellbeing. Apart from relaxation and body strength, balance and flexibility, regular practice leads to much improved mental focus". Anthony is a philosophical practitioner and superb ambassador to this globally recognised art in wellbeing and mindfulness. Additional classes are planned for the summer. Classes Monday Communicare 10.40-11.40 and Trinity PH 3.00-4.00pm and Friday at St Martins PH 10.40-11.40. More classes on the horizon.
